Association Between IL-10 and Serum Hepcidin in Patients with β-Thalassemia Major: A Case-Control Study Using Multiple Statistical Modeling
Abstract / Summary:
The study focuses on the relationship between inflammatory markers and the iron-regulatory hormone (Hepcidin) in 100 patients with \beta-Thalassemia Major compared to 40 healthy individuals.
The results revealed that thalassemia patients had significantly higher levels of ferritin, liver enzymes (GOT, GPT), blood glucose, and inflammatory markers compared to healthy controls. Additionally, a very strong positive correlation (r = 0.838) was observed between the inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and the hormone Hepcidin.
Advanced statistical analyses demonstrated that IL-10 is independently associated with elevated Hepcidin levels, even after controlling for factors such as ferritin and hemoglobin. Furthermore, significant differences were observed between the types of iron chelation therapy and inflammation levels, demonstrating that inflammatory activity plays a key role in iron regulation in these patients and should be given special attention alongside iron management.
