Two researchers of Halabja University participate in an international conference in Italy
MARE (Mediterranean Alliance for Research and Education) Project Final Conference “Beyond Migrations: People and Human Motilities Across Contemporary Mediterranean History” was held on 2–3 March 2026 at the University of Pavia in Italy.
Over the two days, five different panels were organized, bringing together scholars and researchers from universities in Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, and Unites States of America. to discuss migration, mobility, language, and historical connections across the Mediterranean.
One of the key sessions was the panel titled “Genocide,
Memories and Reconciliation in Halabja,” chaired by Prof. Emanuela Mangiarotti.
The panel included presentations by Dr. Hoshman Ata Mahmod (University of
Halabja), who presented on the political and military motives of the Iraqi
regime behind the 1988 Halabja massacre. Then Dr. Karwan Fatah Abdulrahman
(University of Halabja), who discussed the image of the Halabja genocide in
Iranian media. and Prof. Antonio M. Morone (University of Pavia), who examined
the past and present memories of the Halabja massacre and their role in
historical understanding and reconciliation.
The panel highlighted the importance of remembering the
tragedy of Halabja, analyzing its historical context, and promoting academic
dialogue on genocide memory and reconciliation within the broader Mediterranean
and Middle Eastern historical framework.
